Get the complete attention of the child. It is important to teach the value of communicating well: words should not be rushed and sentences should not be broken. Maintain a polite and emphatic tone. Enunciate carefully.
Speak with meaning. Do not speak for the sake of speaking and teach your child to control this tendency too. Good communication means purposeful, effective speaking.
When you finish speaking, give the child your complete attention so he can speak fully. Do not interrupt; this is how he will learn not to interrupt when someone else speaks.
Listen with attention and interest. This is how your child will learn how to listen politely: an essential aspect of good communication skills. Do not cut in, or ask him to get to the point. Be patient.
Exercise good manners when starting a conversation with your child or when starting to listen when he begins one. This will teach him the courtesy that is due to others with whom he communicates. Be a good listener and he will follow your cue!
