Talk about the causes and appearance of various meteorological events. Have children finger-paint a storm using "washable puff paint." Make the paint by mixing together 1/3 cup white glue, 2 tbsp. tempera paint, 2 cups shaving cream and 1 tbsp. liquid soap.
While the painting is drying, create marbled card stock near a sink. Cover a cookie sheet with 1 inch of shaving cream. Squeeze thin lines of acrylic paint in assorted colors into the shaving cream. Using a pencil, create wavy lines in the paint. Firmly press a sheet of card stock onto the shaving cream. Hold the card under warm water to remove excess paint and cream. Let the card dry. Center and glue the painting to the card stock.
Talk to children about the coloring, food and habitats of various birds. To create glittering "eggs," brush ordinary jelly beans with white craft glue. Set beans in a cup of powdered glitter; spoon glitter over them. Take beans out of the cup and put them on wax paper to dry.
Brush craft glue onto the tail and wings of a plastic bird. Sprinkle powdered or fine glitter onto the glue. Shake off excess glitter. Let the bird dry. Apply glue and glitter in a different color to the rest of the bird.
Inflate a small balloon and insert it into a bowl with the knot facing down. Pour craft glue into a small cup. Dip various nesting materials into glue and gently shake off the excess. Layer the materials on the balloon. Place your largest materials first and fill in the holes with the smaller items. When the materials are dry, pop the balloon.
Fill the nest with glittered "eggs," then set the bird on top.
Have children retell a story using puppets. Insert a wooden spoon through the top of a water bottle. The spoon will become the puppet's face and the bottle its body. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and cut arm holes in the sides of the bottle at 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock. Cover the spoon and bottle with a sock; cut holes in the sock to match the holes in the sides of the bottle. Stuff the sock to resemble a face and body. Using fabric glue, attach yarn "hair," as well as facial features and clothing cut out of felt. Decorate with beads.
Use boxes to display "produce." Mix 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 2 tbsp. warm water and 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil, then shape it into "produce." Paint the "produce" in appropriate colors. Have children create signs as well as a banner announcing the market. Transactions are carried out using scales, play money and cash registers.
