Help your students make a bookmark to give their grandparents on Grandparents Day. Give students a strip of white card stock that is two inches wide and seven inches long. Punch a hole in the top. Provide markers, crayons or paint, and encourage students to decorate the bookmark. When the decorations are complete, laminate the bookmarks and tie a colorful piece of ribbon in the hole.
Provide a variety of art supplies, including colored paper, paints, crayons, markers, colored pencils and chalk and have students make a picture of a special day they spent with their grandparents. When they have completed their artwork, ask them to say a few sentences about what they did on their special day and write down what they dictate on an index card. Attach the card to the top of the picture and display in the classroom.
Help students make a card to give to their grandparents in honor of Grandparents Day. Give each student a piece of paper in the color they choose. Show students how to fold the paper in half to make a card. Help each student to write a short message on the inside of the card, and Happy Grandparents Day on the front. Encourage students to decorate the card with markers, stickers and glitter.
Celebrate Grandparents Day by inviting your students' grandparents to the classroom for a party. Display student artwork in the classroom for grandparents to view. Invite your students to introduce their grandparents to the class when they arrive. If possible, let students help decorate cookies or cupcakes for refreshments. For entertainment, plan a short performance in which students sing songs, recite short poems or put on a simple play in honor of their grandparents.
Help students create a scrapbook in honor of their grandparents. During your class party give students and grandparents finger paint and paper, and ask them to make hand prints. Take a picture of each student with their grandparents. After the party, give each student their hand prints and pictures. Provide paper, glue and art supplies, and invite students to decorate several pages for their scrapbook. In addition, include any artwork the students completed for their grandparents. On the front cover, help students write "Me and My Grandparents." Punch holes on the left side of each page, and use ribbon or yarn to tie the pages into a book.
