Ask that the grandparents bring in small photographs of themselves, their children, and their grandchildren. Help children to color a large paper tree and glue pictures of their grandparents at the top. Underneath the grandparents, glue photographs of the children of the grandparents, explaining to the students that these are their parents, aunts and uncles. Underneath the appropriate photographs, have the students glue pictures of themselves, siblings and cousins. This will help them to understand the makeup and relationships in their family.
Take a picture of each student with their grandparents. Have students create frames for their pictures using simple, plain frames from a craft store. Purchase materials such as paints, stickers and feathers for them to decorate their frames. Make sure both grandparents and students go home with a keepsake frame.
Ask grandparents and students to bring in favorite photographs of them together. Fold an 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheet of card stock in half and ask grandparents to trim the card stock so that it is a square. Do this same thing with two sheets of 8 1/2-by-11-inch white paper. Nestle the white paper inside of the card stock to make a book, and bind the pages together by tying a ribbon around the folded edges. Have the students paste the photographs inside the book, and use markers and stickers to decorate the cover.
Give each student a sheet of construction paper and a stack of magazines. Tell each grandparent that they are to look through the magazines with their grandchild and pick out some of their favorite things, such as foods, places to travel, cars and movie stars. Have the student cut out these pictures and paste them onto the construction paper to make a collage. When the collages are complete, have each student share with the class what they learned about their grandparents from creating the collage.
