Teach preschoolers about the Olympic games with a week of crafts, activities and games revolving around the big event. Have children make flags out of felt to symbolize their national teams, then have an in-class parade to show off their creations. Compete in challenges each day, such as a ring toss and relay races. Then make Olympic medals for all the children to celebrate their participation and achievements.
Preschoolers don't understand all the rules of team sports, but a game of tee ball where everyone gets a chance to hit, or a soccer game where everyone takes shots on goal, are fun athletic activities that preschoolers can understand. Get out the hula hoops and let kids give it a whirl. Tag is a simple game which gets preschoolers running and also excites them.
Create papier mache balls that look like footballs, baseballs and soccer balls. Let preschoolers decorate plain shirts to create their own team "jerseys." Help the kids write their names on the back of each shirt. Make a fishing pole out of a stick and string, then cut fish out of construction paper and play a game of "catching the fish."
Preschoolers love to do finger painting, color, draw, play with modeling clay and make puppets. Do handprint and footprint crafts where you turn the prints into animals or holiday-themed creations such as reindeer or wreaths. Turn brown paper lunch bags into hand puppets with the aid of yarn, wobbly eyes, markers and construction paper.
