Sports Arts/Crafts Ideas for Preschoolers

Introduce your child to the world of sports through arts and crafts. Allow the children to be creative when making the crafts, and encourage them to come up with their own games and sports. There is a wide variety of sports to choose from. Encourage your preschoolers to name all the sports they can think of and teach them about those sports as you craft.
  1. Ball Sports Mobile

    • The most commonly known sports are the ball sports such as basketball, football, baseball and soccer. Have the child cut out different ball shapes and color the shapes. Use paper or foam sheets for the cutouts. Give each child a variety of ball shapes to decorate. Punch a hole at the top of each shape and tie a string around it. Bend a hanger to attach the strings and hang the mobiles around the classroom. Discuss with the children what they know about the different sports and if they play any sports themselves.

    Winter Sports Shadow Box

    • The winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding and ice skating, are not only fun to watch, but also fun to make into crafts. Have the child paint craft sticks to look like skis or glue two sticks together and paint to look like a snowboard. Give each child a shoebox to decorate with a winter scene. Use white fiber stuffing to represent the snow and cut construction paper to make mountains to decorate. Make a skating rink in the center and ice skates with craft sticks and paper cutouts. Attach embroidery thread for the laces. Let the child decorate the box and draw people inside or on separate paper to glue in the box.

    Summer Sports Puppet Theatre

    • Summer sports encompass a broad range of activities, including track and field, skateboarding and the little known sport of parkour. Use cardboard to build ramps and have the children decorate the ramps. Make finger skateboards out of craft sticks, complete with little wheels. Be creative and use googly eyes for the wheels. Create finger puppet people out of scrap material and glue on googly eyes and yarn for hair. Build hurdles out of craft sticks. Have the children put on their own sport competition puppet show.

    Martial Arts T-Shirts

    • Discuss the various martial arts with your students and show them some basic moves. Have the children give a martial arts name to the class. Write the name on the back of a white or light colored T-shirt. Let each child decorate the T-shirt with fabric paints. Give them ideas for the shirts, such as drawing people doing different moves, or writing the names of different branches of martial arts. You can also teach them how to write the names in Japanese or Chinese and have the child write it on the shirt. Give each child a white belt to wear proudly with the shirt.
