Teddy Bear Valentine Arts & Crafts for Preschoolers

Originally thought to honor St. Valentine, a legendary Italian monk who rescued slaves with the help of his lover, Valentine's Day eventually became associated with celebrating the friends and lovers in one's life. The English popularized the custom of exchanging cards and small gifts in the 17th and 18th Centuries. It caught on in the United States soon after. People of all ages celebrate Valentine's Day in the U.S., including preschoolers. There are a number of crafts that combine the spirit of Valentine's Day with one of its mascots, the teddy bear.
  1. Foam Heart Bear

    • Preschoolers can construct this craft with little difficulty. Kids take small foam hearts, available at most craft supply stores around Valentine's Day and turn them into bear shapes. Two large hearts are glued together at the pointed tips to form the body. Then, students glue a smaller, different-color heart over the intersection. Two hearts glued to the sides of that heart give the appearance of bear hands hugging the heart to the body. A pair of googly eyes and a sequined nose finish this item.

    Teddy Bear Pin

    • This craft also makes use of foam construction. For this exercise, students cut bear shapes out of brown craft foam. They glue sequined hearts to the center of the bear shapes. Using black markers, students then design a little face on the bear and can add other details as well. Googly eyes complete the face of the bear. The whole foam bear can be mounted to a larger heart shape and a brooch pin is glued to the back. The pin can also be attached to the bear without mounting it to a cardboard heart.

    Teddy Bear Candy Holder

    • This craft combines two Valentine's Day staples: teddy bears and candy. For this craft, students can create a papier mache box or cut the top off a tissue box and cover with brown paint or construction paper. The box is filled with candy and a sheet of plastic, such as a piece of a zipper-top plastic bag, covers the opening. Students create a bear's face, arms and feet out of craft foam and attach them to the box. A small red bow tie can be added as an accessory.

    Teddy Bear Card

    • Greeting cards make up a large part of the Valentine's Day industry, with close to 1 billion cards being sent worldwide each year according to the Greeting Card Association. Preschoolers can make a cute Valentine's Day card out of red or pink construction paper. The paper gets cut into the shape of a bear with extra long arms. The arms fold inward and close the card over the chest of the bear, where the greeting gets printed. The recipient opens the card and gets treated to a sweet message and a cute bear with its arms wide open for a holiday embrace.
