Goodnight Moon Crafts for Preschoolers

"Goodnight Moon" is a children's book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. This book has been a favorite for preschoolers for more than 50 years. Educators and parents can incorporate craft projects with a "Goodnight Moon" theme to assist preschoolers in gaining a better understanding of the story.
  1. Nighttime Picture

    • Provide preschoolers with a sheet of dark blue or black construction paper, as well as other materials for creating a nighttime scene. Materials may include chalk, old magazines for cutting out pictures, glitter or star-shaped stickers. Encourage children to design a nighttime scene, either based on the pictures in "Goodnight Moon" or from their own imaginations.

    Books

    • Have preschoolers create their own version of "Goodnight Moon" by providing them with several blank pages, attached together to form a book. On the bottom of each page, write the word "Goodnight" followed by a blank line. Assist children in filling in each of the blank lines with objects from their imagination. Draw a picture for each object.

    Cow and Moon Puppets

    • Create cow and moon puppets by providing the preschoolers with pictures of a cow and a moon to illustrate the line in the book "goodnight cow jumping over the moon." Color and cut out the pictures. Tape craft sticks to the back of each picture. Preschoolers can make their cows jump over the moon. This craft project also works well with the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle."

    Paper Plate Moons

    • Help preschoolers staple two paper plates together, with the bottom sides facing out. Paint the moons yellow and sprinkle with glitter. Allow the paint to dry completely. Alternatively, preschoolers can insert a noise-making material, such as beans or macaroni, between the two plates to create a shaker.
