Creating a horse from a paper cutout of a hand is one way to reinforce the letter h. Trace each child's hand onto a brown, black or white piece of construction, with all four fingers pointing up and the thumb pointing straight out. Assist the child with cutting the hand out before allowing him to decorate his horse. Have students color the fingertips black for hooves, add a face to the tip of the thumb, and a mane made of yarn to the upper edge of the thumb. If desired, glue the hand horse onto a piece of construction paper and use craft sticks to make a corral for it.
A child's foot makes a simple template for a horse's face in this craft. Have each student stand on a piece of construction paper and trace around her shoe or foot. Cut out the template and glue it onto a piece of construction paper. Let the child cut out a construction paper neck and ears to glue to the paper and have her use a marker or crayon to add eyes and nostrils to the horse's face. Cut small pieces of yarn to serve as the mane, gluing them down the horse's neck, or have younger children draw the mane with markers or crayons.
Horse puppets give preschoolers the opportunity to act out scenes with horses of their own creation. Give older preschoolers a piece of construction paper or card stock and allow them to draw and cut out their own horse shape. Invite younger students to trace a classroom pattern or cut out a teacher-created horse shape. Allow students to decorate their horses, including hooves and facial features, before gluing on a yarn mane and tail and attaching the puppets to craft sticks.
Stick horses give preschoolers the opportunity to ride their own steed. Have each student stuff recycled paper into a brown paper bag. Attach each horse head to an empty wrapping paper tube by inserting the end of the tube into the open end of the bag and securing the bag to the tube with tape, bending the bag down so it sticks out from the tube. Let students add eyes, ears and nostrils made from construction paper and markers. Glue on brown or black feathers to serve as the mane.
