Rainbow-Themed Crafts for Preschoolers

When learning about weather, preschoolers will be curious about the phenomenon of rainbows. Introduce the topic of rainbows by talking to students about how rainbows are made and the colors that make them up: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Use craft activities to help them explore the colors, shape and myth of rainbows. Hang up the finished crafts to immediately bring color and light to the classroom.
  1. Woven Paper Rainbow

    • Start with a sheet of 8 1/2-by-11-inch piece of construction paper of any color, and fold the paper in half lengthwise. Cut 1 inch strips into the paper, starting at the folded edge and stopping each cut 1 inch from the paper's edge. The paper is still intact around the edges. Use scalloped or zigzag edges scissors to cut strips of construction paper for each color of the rainbow. Weave the the first rainbow strip into the weft by going over, under, over; weave the second strip into the weft by going under, over, under. Continue alternating the weave with each new rainbow strip. Put a dot of craft glue on the tips of each rainbow strip and secure both ends to the weft.

    Rainbow of Beads

    • Create a 5-inch-high by 9-inch-wide rainbow template onto white printer paper. Pour acrylic or wooden beads in all of the colors of the rainbow onto white plates so that all of the colors are visible. Draw a line of glue at the center of the arch in the template and stick purple beads along the line. Draw a second line of glue around the outside of the purple one, and place blue beads along this one. The craft is finished once the outermost arch of red beads has been glued in place.

    Rainbow Wind Catchers

    • Cut the middle circle out of a paper plate and decorate the rim of the plate with markers, crayons, stickers or paint; this will be the body of the wind catcher. Cut 8 inch paper streamers of red, yellow, orange, green, blue and purple; the streamers can also be staggered in length for added visual interest. Glue the streamers along one edge of the wind catcher. Glue a loop of ribbon or string to the top of the plate rim and use it to hang the wind catcher up in an outdoor space so that the streamers hang from the bottom and are free to flutter in the breeze.

    Classroom Rainbow

    • Hand out a piece of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or purple construction paper to each preschooler. Students trace their hand in pencil onto the construction paper, cut them out with scissors and write their name in the middle with marker. Lay red hands into an arch so that each one slightly overlaps the one next to it. Glue the fingers together at the point where they overlap. Make an arch of orange hands and place it so that the top of the orange arch slightly overlaps the bottom of the red arch. Glue the arches in place where they overlap. Continue making arches of each color and connecting them to create a full rainbow.
