Using objects from nature, along with a few everyday items, children can create a fairly lifelike representation of a snow owl. Materials needed for this craft are pine cones, acorn shells, cotton balls, glue, black felt and scissors. The pine cones and acorns can be found outside, or can be purchased at a craft store. The pine cones should be able to stand up without support. Instruct the children to rip up the cotton balls and glue the pieces into the spaces of the pine cone to represent feathers. Once this step is complete, the kids can add eyes to their owls by gluing on the acorns near the top. Students should complete the owls by cutting a triangle- or cone-shaped beak out of felt and gluing it underneath the acorn eyes.
To make a paper plate snow owl, children will need three paper plates, black construction paper, yellow construction paper, wiggly eyes, glue, scissors and markers. To create the head, have each child fold down about one-third of a plate and cut two slits into the folded part to make three sections. The middle section should be glued down and the two end sections unfolded to make ears on each side. Next, have children cut two circles out of yellow construction paper, glue wiggly eyes onto the circles and attach them to the folded-down section. To finish the head, children can cut out and glue on a black triangle for the beak.
The remaining plates will be used to make the owl’s body. Have children cut one of the plates in half to make wings and glue them onto the third plate at a slight angle, with the straight edges facing outward. Using black construction paper, students can cut out two feet to attach to the bottom of the body. Children can then complete their owls by gluing the head and body together and adding details using a marker.
Preschool children can create a simple three-dimensional snow owl out of a white paper cup, Styrofoam ball, white construction paper, black construction paper, glue, scissors, markers and wiggly eyes. With the cup upside-down, have children attach the ball to the base to make the head. They can then decorate the ball with wiggly eyes and a black triangle nose. The white paper should next be cut into wings and glued to the cup, along with two feet made out of black construction paper. Kids can choose to use a marker and add details, such as spots if they are making a female owl, or it can be left plain to be a male snow owl.
