Celebrate Veterans Day with your own class parade, complete with parade hats, recommends the website Free Kids Crafts. To make the hats, give each preschool student a strip of red paper long enough to wrap around her head. Give students glue, glitter, markers and stars cut from construction paper to decorate. Wrap the band around the student's head and use a glue stick to secure. Practice marching around your classroom, and give each student a chance to be the leader. Provide refreshments, and invite local veterans to take part in the festivities and share their experiences with the class.
Help preschoolers create a patriotic ribbon toy to celebrate Veterans Day, recommends the website Kaboose. Give each student a piece of white paper and red and blue markers. Invite students to decorate the paper. Help students wrap the decorated paper around the paper tube and glue to secure. Give students red, white and blue ribbons, and help them staple the ribbons onto the end of the paper tube. Encourage students to use these streamers while marching in your class parade.
Help your students show their appreciation to those who have served in the U.S. military with thank you cards. Find a veterans' association location to send your cards. During circle time, explain to students how the military keeps students and their families safe. Tell students that each of them will be making a card to send to someone who served in the military. Give each student a piece of card stock, and show him how to fold it in half to make a card. Give students markers, crayons and paint and let them decorate their cards. Help preschoolers write "Thank You" inside their cards. Put all cards together in a large envelope and drop off at your designated location.
Teach preschool students about the American flag. Draw a simple black-and-white flag on a rectangular sheet of paper. Do not draw stars. Print one flag for each student. During circle time, show your students a picture of the American flag. Together, count the number of stripes and the number of stars. Talk about the colors and shapes on the flag. Give each student a flag worksheet. Help students use markers to color the stripes. Ask students to color the square in the top left-hand corner blue. Give each student silver stars to put on the flag. Hang these in your classroom for Veterans Day.
