Stock the classroom with a variety of art supplies that are age-appropriate for toddlers. Include such kid-friendly supplies as crayons, finger paint, nontoxic glue, construction paper, and nontoxic modeling clay. Keep them safely stored away, and only bring out the ones needed for a specific art activity. Always provide adult supervision to ensure the toddlers don't hurt themselves or eat any of the materials.
Decorate the classroom with prints of artwork from a variety of adult artists. This exposes children to art and lets them see different styles.
Set up a spot in the classroom to display the toddlers' artwork pieces. The display area lets the kids explore other children's art. You also place an emphasis on creativity and art by using the kids' artwork to decorate the room.
Include an art center if your toddler classroom uses learning centers. Change the type of artwork available in this center on a regular basis.
Plan art projects for the entire toddler class based on the current teaching themes. For example, if the current theme is food, cut a variety of vegetables in half and let the toddlers dip them in paint to create stamps. This reinforces your teaching themes while encouraging art-based creativity.
Reinforce basic toddler concepts with art. For example, let kids paint cutouts of the alphabet letters to encourage letter recognition through art.
