How to Change a Fraction Into a Decimal by Division

If different number forms were an extended family, fractions and decimals could be siblings, or at least really close cousins. A fraction and a decimal can both be a part of one. A fraction illustrates a part of one with a numerator less than its denominator, and a decimal becomes part of one when it less than one and greater than zero. When you change a fraction into a decimal, the form may change, but the meaning stays the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify a fraction for example purposes. For this example, let the fraction be 3/5.

    • 2

Separate the numerator and the denominator into separate numbers. In this example, the numerator and denominator become 3 and 5.

    • 3

Divide the number that was denominator into the number that was the numerator. Concluding this example, dividing 5 into 3 results in 0.6. The example fraction of 3/5 converts to 0.6.
