How to Do Quotients in Division

Each part of a division sentence has a name and a function. The dividend is the number being divided, the divisor is the number doing the dividing, and the quotient is the outcome, or answer. For example in the sentence 16 ÷ 2 = 8, 16 is the dividend, 2 is the divisor, and 8 is the quotient.

Instructions

  1. Division

    • 1

Identify the divisor and the dividend to determine what you are being asked to divide. For example, in the problem 15 ÷ 3, you are being asked to divide 15 by 3.

    • 2
Sometimes using concrete examples can help.

Determine how many times 3 will go in to 15. Try to imagine a real example: if you have 15 apples, figure out how many groups of 3 apples you can get from those 15.

    • 3

Identify your answer, or quotient. In the example 15 ÷ 3, the answer is 5.

    • 4

Determine the remainder when the answer does not divide evenly. For example, in the problem 17 ÷ 3, follow steps Nos. 1-3, and identify how many you have left over. This is your remainder. In this case, the quotient is 5 with a remainder of 2.
