How to Modify a Noun

Correctly modifying nouns is key to producing clear writing. Modifiers modify or limit the meaning of a sentence by adding a word that describes the noun or nouns in the sentence. For example, the noun "shoe" can be modified by putting the word "my" in front of it, which specifies that the shoe belongs to me. Alternatively, "shoe" could be modified by "smelly," indicating that the shoe in question emits an odor. Sentences become more detailed when modifiers are used, and sometimes a sentence will not make sense without one.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a basic topic for your sentence.

    • 2

Determine the subject (noun) of your sentence (example: girl).

    • 3

Choose the action (verb) of your sentence (example: read).

    • 4

Pick the object (noun) of your sentence (example: book).

    • 5

Combine the subject, verb and object into a simple sentence (example: The girl read a book).

    • 6

Choose a detail to describe the subject of your sentence (examples: young, bored, clever).

    • 7

Insert this detail (the subject's modifier) in front of the subject in the sentence (example: The young girl read a book.).

    • 8

Select a detail to describe the object of your sentence (examples: her, long, frightening).

    • 9

Insert this detail (the object's modifier) in front of the object in the sentence (example: The young girl read her book.).

    • 10

Modify the subject and/or the object with more than one detail, if this adds further clarity to the sentence (example: The young girl read her long book.).
