How to Do Two-Digit Division

Division problems consist of a divisor (the number being divided into another number), a dividend (the number into which the divisor is being divided) and a quotient (the number of times the divisor fits into the dividend). Many division problems involve two or more digits. You can easily perform division involving two-digit numbers through a process known as long division. This process involves basic mathematical skills such as multiplication and subtraction.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the problem. Draw a division bracket and place the divisor to the left of the bracket and the dividend underneath the bracket. For example, you might be dividing 575 by 50. The number 50 would go on the left of the bracket, and the number 575 would go under the bracket.

    • 2

Check to see if the divisor will fit into the first two digits of the dividend, moving from left to right. In this example, 50 will fit into 57 one time. Write your answer (1 in this case) above the tens column (second from right) on top of the bracket. This will be the first digit of your quotient. (If the divisor doesn't fit into the first two digits, you would divide it into the first three digits.)

    • 3

Multiply the first digit of your quotient bythe divisor and subtract the product from the relevant dividend digits. In this example, you would multiply 1 times 50, which you would write directly underneath the 57 in the dividend. Subtract 50 from 57 to get 7.

    • 4

Drop down the next digit of the dividend. The next digit in this example is 5, so you would drop down the 5 by writing it next to the 7 that you calculated in Step 3.

    • 5

Determine how many times the divisor will fit into the new number created when you dropped the digit in Step 4. In this case, you would divide 50 into 57 once. Write this digit (1) on top of the bracket, directly over the ones digit of the dividend. This is the second digit of your quotient.

    • 6

Multiply the second digit of your quotient times the divisor and write the answer underneath the bottom line of the problem. In this case, 1 times 50 is 50, which you would write underneath the 75 at the bottom of the problem. Subtract 50 from 75 to get 25.

    • 7

State your answer, along with any possible remainders, fractions or decimals. In this case, 575 divided 50 equals 11 with a remainder of 25. Therefore, you could write your answer as 11R25, 11 25/50 (which reduces to 11 1/2) or 11.5.
