Find two numbers you wish to divide. One number is the divisor --- this is the number that is divided into the dividend. For instance, if you want to divide 20 by 5, 20 is the dividend and 5 the divisor. The divisor is placed in front of the dividend on the outside of the bracket, which looks like an "L" turned 45 degrees to the right.
Determine how many times your divisor fits into your dividend. For instance, if you have chosen 5 and 20, count how many times 5 goes into 20. In this case, the answer is 4.
Write the sum on top of the bracket. This is the solution to your basic division problem.
