Examine the layout of the calculator. Most calculators have the numerals located in the middle with zero at the bottom and working upward, in rows of three. The basic mathematical symbols appear to the right while the other symbols are spread throughout the calculator. Additional buttons, such as "On" and "Clear," usually appear near the top of the calculator.
Locate the basic mathematical symbols on your calculator, including the plus sign (+) for addition, minus sign (-) for subtraction, the multiplication symbol (x or *), division sign (/) and equals sign (=). Practice using these operations by practicing basic arithmetic operations. For example, the problem "9 x 10" would be calculated by pressing the "9" key, the multiplication key, the "10" key and the equals key.
Practice using the other mathematical symbols on the calculator that pertain to your course. Most high school and college courses require the use of the square root, percentage, exponential, reciprocal, trigonometric and logarithmic functions. While the process will vary according to calculator, practice with a few problems to familiarize yourself with your particular calculator. You may have to use the second function by pressing the "2nd" button and finding the corresponding function on another button that you need to use for your calculation. Read the owner's manual for your calculator for further information on the particular second functions available on your device.
