How We Use Math Concepts Everyday

Almost every student has sat in a math class at some point and wondered when they would actually use the concepts they were learning. While most of us don't use calculus or trigonometry on a daily basis, almost everyone uses basic math skills every day --- often without even realizing it. In fact, without math, many of the seemingly simple tasks we complete every day, such as shopping, budgeting, cooking and decorating, would be nearly impossible.

Instructions

    • 1

Add up your purchases as you shop to provide an idea of how much you'll pay at the checkout. Adding as you go helps you stay within budget.

    • 2

Calculate the cost of an item when the cost is reduced by a particular percentage. To calculate the cost easily, subtract the discount percentage from 100 percent, and multiply the item cost by the remaining percentage.

    • 3

Determine whether or not that super-sized jar of pickles really is a great deal by calculating the per-pickle cost. Divide the cost of the item by the number of pickles (or whatever the item may be) to figure out the actual cost per pickle.

    • 4

Add up your monthly expenses to help create a household budget. Subtract the expenses from your monthly income to accurately calculate your financial picture.

    • 5

Determine how much money you need to save for a large purchase, such as a vacation or new home. Divide the amount of money you need by the amount of time --- years, months or weeks --- you want to save for the purchase to determine how much you need to put away each period to reach your goal.

    • 6

Complete a painting project by measuring the room to calculate how much wall space you need to cover. Depending on the type of paint you plan to use and the size of the container of paint, you'll need to calculate how much paint to buy to complete the job.

    • 7

Measure your room --- and the doorway --- before you purchase new furniture. Measuring ahead of time prevents disappointment when your new purchase doesn't fit in the room.

    • 8

Plant a garden by measuring the space you need, and plant seeds or plants according to the instructions on the seed packet or plant tag. In order for plants to grow, they need to be spaced correctly.

    • 9

Measure ingredients for a recipe, according to the instructions. To change the yield of a recipe, divide or multiply the recipe measurements. When shopping for recipe ingredients, understanding how many ounces make up a pound, for example, or how many fluid ounces comprise a cup can help you purchase the right amount of ingredients to complete your recipe.
