Help your child see math as a way to solve real problems by using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in everyday life. Show your child how you save money on groceries by checking supermarket ads and using coupons. Cook with your children to teach fractions with measuring cups and spoons. Use nutrition labels on packaged foods to teach percentages.
Practice mathematical thinking. Everyday Math encourages children to share their thoughts on math. This allows kids to learn from each other and create greater understanding through their own thinking processes. Find opportunities to share mathematical thinking with your child.
Read the materials that come home from your child's math class. Support your child in completing the Home Links or Study Links based on lessons from the day. Review your child's homework when it has been completed.
Recognize that your child's Everyday Math homework will look different from what you're used to. Everyday Math builds on prior learning, so every exercise features review. Children are encouraged to explore multiple ways of solving math problems and checking answers, and even to use calculators. Have your child explain concepts like lattice multiplication that may be new to you. Keep an open mind.
Play games with your child. Everyday Math makes learning math fun by reinforcing concepts through math games like "Top-It." Have your child teach you this and other Everyday Math games. Use the math involved in any family games-counting turns, calculating point scores-to reinforce math concepts.
