How to Use Hooked on Math

Hooked on Math is a program designed to help children ages six through 10 learn math skills. This program was created by the same company that launched the popular Hooked on Phonics series in the 1980s. Hooked on Math was first marketed in 1990. If your child is struggling with math or if you just want to provide extra practice for him, this program can help to motivate your child and simplify mathematical concepts.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a workbook that will suit your child's needs. There are four workbooks that come with the program. These books cover adding and subtracting smaller numbers, adding and subtracting larger numbers, multiplication and division. Start with a book that is developmentally appropriate for your child.

    • 2

Show your child a lesson in the workbook and read over the introduction together.

    • 3

Play the audio CD that corresponds with the lesson.

    • 4

Instruct your child to complete the practice problems for the lesson. Check the answers, which are printed in the back of the workbook. Discuss any necessary corrections.

    • 5

Use the math manipulatives that correspond with the lesson. Hooked on Math provides flash cards and toy money as hands-on tools that help to illustrate various lessons.

    • 6

Play the game at the end of the lesson with your child to review what was learned.

    • 7

Chart your child's progress by placing a sticker on his progress chart. This helps to keep your child motivated by celebrating his accomplishments.
