How to Tutor Children in Math

With at least a high school diploma, you have enough skills to tutor a child in math. Math is often confusing to children because it has a lot of abstract concepts. The challenge in tutoring children in math is translating these abstract concepts for the child. That's why it's good to use manipulatives such as beans or other small items that children can hold and see. Use worksheets to test the child's capabilities and to help him with memorization. Always ensure that the child you are tutoring understands the basic concepts before moving on to more difficult ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess the child's math skills in counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by asking him to answer questions on a math worksheet. Shoolfamily.com has free, printable worksheets that can be used for math assessments.

    • 2

Ask the child to identify a number on a flashcard and to match it to the number of beans. Ask him to count the beans up to 100 and then in groups of twos, threes, fours, and up to tens, which will also help him memorize the multiplication table faster.

    • 3

Present two separate sets of beans to the child, then combine the beans and ask him to count the total number of beans to clarify the concept of addition. Present a set of beans and take away a subset of beans, then ask the child to count the resulting difference to clarify the concept of subtraction.

    • 4

Ask the child to practice single, two-digit and three-digit addition and subtraction by answering worksheets found Schoolfamily.com. Increase the difficulty level as the child progresses.

    • 5

Hold up math flash cards in addition and subtraction, and ask the child to give the answer. This will help him memorize math facts in addition and subtraction.

    • 6

Hold up math flashcards in multiplication and division to help the child memorize math facts in multiplication and division.

    • 7

Ask the child to memorize the multiplication table and to practice single-digit, two-digit and three-digit multiplication and division using worksheets. Increase the level of difficulty as the child progresses.
