Teach kinesthetic learners by using math manipulatives. Math manipulatives allow children to interact with numbers physically. Addition, subtraction, division and multiplication can be demonstrated with hands-on activities that involve beads, blocks, rubber bands and even little plastic bears. There are companies that produce math manipulatives that can allow active children to complete arithmetic problems using their hands. (See Resources Below)
Teach auditory learners using math songs. Musical CDs are available that span every topic of basic mathematics, with each lesson taught via songs that help auditory learners retain the information. Companies such as Songs for Teaching offer musical compositions that teach everything from basic math to algebra. (See Resources Below)
Teach visual learners with the aid of math flash cards. Flash cards help visual learners see the math facts, and to visually follow number sequences and patterns. There are various types of flash cards that cover every topic required of basic math learners. (See Resources Below) For young children, flash cards that picture animals can help hold their attention, while black-and-white flash cards can be easier for older children to follow.
