How to Change an Improper Fraction

An improper faction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. What this means is that the fraction can be turned into a mixed number or a whole number with a decimal remaining (in most cases). The process of changing an improper fraction into one of these generally more acceptable forms only requires a basic understanding of math.

Instructions

  1. Mixed Fractions

    • 1

Divide the numerator by the denominator on the improper fraction you wish to change. For example, in the fraction 3/2 you divide the 3 by 2.

    • 2

Write down the answer using a remainder, not a decimal. You will use the remainder to turn the improper fraction into a mixed fraction.

    • 3

Take the whole number portion of the answer (ignore the remainder for now) and write that number down. In the 3/2 example, your whole number will be 1 because 3 can only be divided by 2 one time.

    • 4

Take the remainder and place that in the numerator position on a fraction beside the whole number. The denominator should be the same as it was in the original fraction. This is the mixed fraction that equates to the improper fraction. For example, the mixed number for 3/2 is 1 1/2.

    • 5

      Reduce the fraction if possible.

    Decimals

    • 6

Divide the numerator by the denominator on the improper fraction you wish to change. For example, with the improper fraction 3/2 you divide the 3 by 2.

    • 7

Write down the answer using decimals as opposed to remainders. To do this, simply continue to divide out the fraction instead of stopping when you get a remainder. For example, 3 divided by 2 is 1.5.

    • 8

Check your math by multiplying the answer by the denominator. If you end up with the numerator, you have done the math correctly and have converted the improper fraction into a whole number and a decimal. For example, 1.5 X 2 = 3, and 3 was your numerator in the improper fraction 3/2.
