How to Read Fractions

Reading a fraction and knowing what it means can be seem challenging. Many of us have some pretty strong feelings towards math because numbers represent such an abstract concept, and often fractions are even harder to visualize than most numbers. Knowing how to read a fraction so that you can interpret what it is saying can be fairly easy with the right steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the top digit, or numerator, of the fraction first. The top digit represents how many parts you have. If the fraction is 3/8, then we would say "three eighths" but we would focus on the top number first. For example, if you have 3/8 of a pie, then you actually have three pieces.

    • 2

Read the bottom digit of the fraction. The bottom digit, or denominator, tells how many parts are in one whole. Using the example above of 3/8, the pie was cut into eight pieces. If the pie had been cut into five pieces, then the bottom number would be 5 and the fraction would be ?/5.

    • 3

Now read the whole fraction. Using the example of pie again, if the fraction is 3/8, then the pie was cut into eight pieces and you have three of them.
