How to Make Preschool Pictures Using Fingerprints or Thumb Prints

Finger and thumb print picture-making activities are an easy way for preschoolers to explore the artistic process, improve fine motor skills and show off the creative spirit. Bridge a variety of themes and even content areas by adding to your art lesson. Show little ones how they are unique by exploring the science of fingerprint identification or add up a bunch of mini-prints to form one whole mathematical design. Make imaginative animals, cool castles, friendly folks or any other design that your child can think up using temperas or colorful finger paints.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a subject for your finger and thumb print picture. Create general process-based explorations in which the child simply experiments with the fingerprinting or try a more structured image of an animal or object.

    • 2

Discuss fingerprints with the preschooler. Show her that each person has different patterns on the tips of the fingers by using your own hands or photos.

    • 3

Prepare your printing area. Select a flat work space such as a table or large desk. Cover the surface with newspapers or plastic sheeting to reduce the mess.

    • 4

Pour golf ball-sized puddles of different paint colors onto a palette or washable art tray.

    • 5

Demonstrate the printing process and show the child how to dip her finger into the paint and then press down onto the construction paper to make an image. Explain that he can make objects or larger designs by combining multiple fingerprints. Compare part-to-whole relationship concepts to putting together a puzzle in which each print is one piece.

    • 6

Invite the preschooler to dip his finger into the paint. Help him to firmly press the painted finger or thumb onto the construction paper. Repeat for more prints, to make a pattern or object.

    • 7

Paint on accents and decorative touches with a thin brush. Encourage the preschooler to add facial features to people or animals, lines or any other extra pieces to the picture.
