How to Make an Astronaut for Preschool

Preschoolers are often fascinated by space, the planets, rocket ships and astronauts. Use these interests to teach important preschool skills such as the alphabet, cutting and gluing by planning an astronaut craft project. You won't need any special equipment or materials for this project. In fact, you'll probably find all of the tools necessary right in your classroom craft closet. The "A is for Astronaut" project can also be used to decorate your preschool classroom for a space-themed week.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an uppercase "A" from the white foam sheet using a craft knife or scissors. You may use a stencil to trace the "A" before you cut it out. Use an 8-by-10-inch foam sheet and cut a letter that's about 4-by-5 inches. You'll have enough of the white foam sheet left over to create the other astronaut parts.

    • 2

Use the the craft knife or scissors to cut out arms and legs, a large round helmet and a rectangular astronaut backpack from the extra white foam sheet.

    • 3

Use scissors to to cut out a face for your astronaut from the pink or flesh-colored foam. It must be slightly smaller than the size of the helmet. Cut out astronaut gloves and boots from the black foam sheet.

    • 4

Cover the rectangular astronaut backpack with tin foil. Secure the foil to the pack with a small amount of glue. Let children add details to the backpack using markers.

    • 5

Use the uppercase A as the body of the astronaut and glue the cut-out parts in the appropriate places on the body. Use a marker to draw a face for your astronaut.
