How to Make a Monster Template for Preschool

Monsters can be scary to many preschoolers. According to author Tracy Edmunds of "Preschool Activities: Explorations, Circles, Centers," you can create a friendly monster craft to teach young children about facing fears. Make a monster template for a preschool project by using children's storybooks. Then use the craft as a way to discuss specific fears and how some fears are good, such as a fear of a growling dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a children's story book with not so scary monsters, such as "Go Away, Big Green Monster!" and "My Monster Mama Loves Me So" to create the monster template. Be sure it is friendly-looking and appropriate for preschoolers.

    • 2

Place tracing paper over a suitable monster picture. It should be an easy to see front view of the entire monster or just its face. Trace the picture with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut out the tracing with scissors. Lay it over thick construction paper or card stock. Trace the monster onto the thicker paper.

    • 4

Cut out the thicker paper to create the template for a monster. Keep this template in a safe place to create monsters whenever you need it for a project, such as Halloween or talking about fears.

    • 5

Trace the template onto construction paper and cut it out. Provide crayons and markers for the children to decorate the monsters.
