Discuss plants and flowers with the preschoolers. Highlight roses as a species. Show colorful photos of different types of roses, such as Hybrid Tea or Floribunda. Use the appropriate names as new vocabulary words for the kids to learn. Ask the children how each type of rose looks different in terms of color or shape. If possible, bring in a few real roses for the children to see up close. Remove any thorns from the stem and allow the children to hold and smell the flowers.
Invite the children to choose colors of tissue paper for the rose petals. Each child may choose either one color, or try two colors for a two-toned effect. Help the children to cut the paper into approximately 8-inch by 10-inch rectangles. It may be useful to give each child a template to trace around. Don't worry if the tissue paper rectangle is slightly smaller or larger than the intended size. Sizes that vary, or even using a square shape, will not negatively impact the overall project outcome. Repeat with a second piece of tissue.
Show the children how to fold the tissue paper like an accordion. Place one piece of tissue on top of the other. Help the children to fold the paper. Pinch the folded pieces of paper in the center to hold.
Give each child a green pipe cleaner. Ask the preschoolers to wrap the top end of the pipe cleaner around the center of the folded tissue paper.
Help the children to fluff out their faux rose petals by opening the folds of the tissue paper.
Cut smaller rectangles out of green tissue paper to make leaves. These should be approximately 4 inches by 6 inches in size. Cut one piece of paper per leaf. Typically one or two leaves will be enough. Turn the paper so that it is longer horizontally. Fold from bottom to top. Twist the middle section of the pipe cleaner around the center of the fold paper. Fluff open to form leaves for your rose.
Spray a quick spritz of rose scented perfume onto the faux flower. This step should only be done by an adult.
