How to Make a Snowman for Art in Preschool

Teaching preschoolers about the seasons and about weather can be tricky unless you have an accompanying activity to stimulate their minds and keep them engaged. For lessons about snow and winter, consider making snowmen. Snowmen are easy to make and provide opportunities to explain concepts such as snow, cold and winter to the preschoolers. In addition, you can teach lessons about shapes and numbers as the children build and decorate their own snowmen.

  • Orange construction paper
  • Large black buttons (2 per snowman)

Instructions

    • 1

Make a "snowman kit" for each preschooler in your class. To make the kit, place the materials inside a zipper-top plastic bag. Add three white paper plates; on two of the paper plates, draw one medium circle and one small circles. Next, add one piece of orange construction paper, two large black buttons, 10 small black buttons, a glue stick, and a pair of safety scissors.

    • 2

Give each preschooler a snowman kit.

    • 3

Instruct the children to cut out the small circle and the medium circle from the white paper plates with circles drawn on them.

    • 4

Tell the children to cut out a triangle from the orange construction paper.

    • 5

Explain how to make the snowman's face. Take the small paper plate circle and glue on the two large buttons for eyes, the orange triangle for a nose, and five small buttons for a smile.

    • 6

Tell the children to glue the remaining five buttons onto the medium sized paper plate. This will form the body. The big paper plate will be the base of the snowman.

    • 7

Glue the head to the body and the body to the base. Display the snowmen in class and discuss winter and snow.
