Ask all the children to bring in one item each week for show and tell. They can bring in a new toy, special rock or any object they want to share. Encourage each child to get up in front of the class and speak about their new toy. Make it more enjoyable by giving each kid candy or a prize for their efforts. The other kids can ask questions to encourage more speech within everyone in the class.
Read rhyming books to the class and encourage the kids to rhyme along with you. Choose books such as "Read Along Rhymes for the Very Young" by Jack Prelutsky or "Horton Hatches the Egg" by Dr. Seuss.
Clap and talk with the kids as they say syllables within a word. The Education.com website recommends doing this because it make it more fun for children to break down words. Introduce one syllable words first and then move on to two and three syllable words. This activity helps preschool children learn new words while having a good time.
Ask the kids to think of words that sound alike and pronounce the words to the class. Just thinking of words on their own becomes fun for many kids. The kids can think up groups of two or more words and then repeat them. Give them some examples to help them come up with ideas. For instance, the words dog, log and frog sound alike and run and fun sound similar.
