Activities on Construction Workers for Preschoolers

Construction worker activities are perfect for preschoolers since they can be adapted to use a variety of their skills. In addition to playtime and artwork, children can begin to learn how to measure things, how to create basic shapes in their projects, and how to work together to build something, just like real construction workers.
  1. Craft Stick House

    • Let each child "build" her own house by gluing craft sticks onto a piece of paper, making a square for the house and a triangle for the roof. She can then draw other details to complete the house, such as a door, windows, bricks and shingles. Or, use craft items, such as pieces of foam cut into these elements, so the children can glue them onto their houses.

    Types of Construction Workers

    • On a large piece of paper on the wall, draw a picture of a building as a cross-section, so children can see the basement, a couple of floors, the exterior, plumbing and roof. Have small pieces of paper ready that look like bricks, roof shingles, pipes, floors and walls. Explain that a different construction worker needs to work on each part of the house. Have the children pretend to be the different workers and build the house by sticking the paper in the right spot.

    Construction Vehicles

    • Let the children play with a variety of toy construction vehicles, such as bulldozers, dump trucks and cranes. Explain that each vehicle is driven by a specially trained construction worker, and have the children take turns driving each one as they play and build whatever they like. Add Legos and let the children create their own city or farm.

    Construction Worker Book

    • Cut out a variety of shapes related to construction workers, such as the workers themselves, vehicles like bulldozers and cement trucks, tools and construction signs. Let the children glue the pictures onto a couple of pieces of paper folded in half to create a construction story book. Write simple sentences related to each picture to finish the story.
