Many kids dread spelling words because it can be difficult and sometimes boring. Children are highly motivated by games and competition, so making the spelling word practice a game can help disinterested kids engage and learn the words. The best part about spelling games is that children of all ages enjoy them. You can also customize the games to make them easy or difficult.

Instructions

  1. Hangman

    • 1

Draw a stick image of a scaffold, then draw a horizontal line for each letter in the spelling word. The lines indicate the number of letters in the word.

    • 2

Ask a student to name a letter. If she guesses a letter in the word, write it on the line that represents where the letter appears in the word. For example, if the word is "behave" and the student guesses "a," write an "a" on the fourth line. If she guesses a letter that does not appear in the word, draw a head connected to the scaffold.

    • 3

Repeat the process by asking the next student to choose another letter. This time, if the student guesses a letter that does not appear in the word, draw a line extending from the head to indicate a body.

    • 4

Continue playing with each student taking turns until the word is completed or until the students have missed enough words to draw two arms and two legs, making a complete figure of a hanged person.

    • 5

Repeat the game with each spelling word.

    Crossword

    • 6

Create a crossword puzzle using a crossword puzzle program on your computer. Use all of the spelling words. Create hints for each word that will be easy enough for the students' grade level.

    • 7

Create a handout with the word bank. This will help the students remember their list of spelling words.

    • 8

Make copies of the crossword puzzles and pass them out to the students. Offer a small prize to the first student or few students who finish the crossword puzzle correctly.

    Magnet Competition

    • 9

Arrange three sets of letter magnets on the magnetic marker board. Make sure that you have enough of each letter in the sets to complete each spelling word.

    • 10

Split the children into three teams. Ask each team to stand in a line.

    • 11

Ask the first children in line to step up to the board. Give them a spelling word from the list. The children will try to spell the word correctly. The first team to spell the word correctly on the board with the magnets will receive three points. The second place team will receive two points and the last place team will receive one point.

    • 12

Repeat the process with the next kids in line, using a different spelling word. Keep going until the children have spelled all of the words.

    • 13

Add up the points for each team. Give the winning team a prize such as a homework pass or a small prize from the prize box.
