Put the spelling words into games and puzzles. Try creating a word search in which the children have to find the spelling words. Be sure to include some trick areas of the puzzle in which you've misspelled the words to make it a little more difficult. Or create word scrambles, in which you scramble the spelling words, and see how quickly the children can unscramble them. Or try a memory game - write half of each word on a card, with the other half on a different card. Place them on a table face down, and the person who matches the most words wins.
Create a story with all of the words on your spelling list. Give the children a topic, such as a fantasy world or a mystery, and see how often they can use the words from the spelling list in their story. Change the theme each time, so they have to write a different story, or try poetry one day.
Write a story that includes all of the words on the spelling list several times, but misspell them a different way each time. Have the children read through the story and see if they can catch all of the misspelled words.
Write each spelling word vertically on a page and have the children write a word that starts with each letter of the spelling word. See how creative they can be by writing words that relate to the spelling word, and go together to create a saying that will help them remember the word.
Time the games and activities each week and see if the students can improve their times from week to week. With practice, the memory game will become easier, as will finding words in word searches or finding spelling mistakes in stories.
