Read or listen for the rime part of the word. For example, in the word fight, "ight" is the rime.
Think of a word that has the same ending, which is the rime. For example, if given the word "fight," it would be necessary to think of a word that ends with "ight."
Change the first letter in the word that was given to a new letter so that the word still has the same ending and rhymes. For example, when thinking of a word that rhymes with fight, changing "f" to "l" would give you the word light. The words have the same ending, therefore the words rhyme.
Repeat the process again by changing the first letter of the word that was given. BBC Schools also has a three-level game that you can use to practice rhyming words. On all the levels, players are asked to click on a word that rhymes with the highlighted word shown on the screen. On level one, players read words with short vowels; on level two, players read words with long vowels; and on level three, players read a mixture of long and short vowel words along with words with r-controlled vowels such as "ir," and "ar."
