How to Make a Creative Word Wall

Whether you're a teacher, tutor, home educator or parent of a child, word walls are a great way to measure children's vocabulary and encourage learning in a fun manner. All it takes are a few art supplies and an open wall to work on. With a word wall, you can track children's progress in vocabulary, spelling and other cognitive abilities. They make great educational tools for preschoolers and kindergarteners especially.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the alphabet on different sheets of computer paper using colored markers and cut out the letters. You may also want to write some basic words, such as "at" and "art." Months of the year and seasons are also options.

    • 2

Locate an open wall and hang a clothesline at the top of it. Position as many clothespins as needed on the clothesline.

    • 3

Decorate the letters using stickers, glitter and other materials. Be as colorful and creative as you want.

    • 4

Pin the letters and words on the clothesline.

    • 5

Create a lesson plan for your students or children. Select words and letters for the word wall based on vocabulary and spelling lessons currently being studied. Ask your students to read aloud from the word wall, defining the words and letters as they go. Use this method to track your students' progress and vocabulary.
