How to Make Montessori Word Drawers

Learning to read is an important step in a child's life. There are many theories and methods to help students learn how to read, such as the use of sight words and phonics. The Montessori method of education uses one such theory, which emphasizes teaching children groups of letter sounds by having them match words and pictures. Montessori practitioners use a set of small drawers, found at most hardware stores, to store cards that contain pictures and corresponding words.

Creating a set of Montessori word drawers for your home or classroom can help children grasp single-sound words more easily. The word groups can be found on many Web sites and in books about Montessori schooling.

Instructions

    • 1

Print each of the 16 word group downloads onto the card stock using colored ink.

    • 2

Cut out the words and pictures from each sheet, such as a picture of a cat and the printed word "cat." Laminate if desired. Keep words and pictures grouped together based on each sheet printed.

    • 3

Write the numbers 1 through 16 on labels with the marker. These numbers correspond with the sheets you printed earlier. Affix one label to each drawer, starting at the top left corner and working from left to right. You should have four empty drawers that will not hold any cards at this time. These will become storage for the sets of cards.

    • 4

Place the picture and word card groups in each drawer based upon the number on the front of the drawer.
