How to Evaluate a Home-School Curriculum

When parents choose to home-school their first child, they can begin looking for curriculum and become overwhelmed by the number of choices that are available. While some choices can be easily ruled out because of price or the values the curriculum teaches, often parents are still left with more choices than they know what to do with. Evaluating the way your child learns and what you want him to learn can help you decide which curriculum to use.

    • 1

Determine how long you will be home schooling. Parents who are home schooling temporarily may decide to borrow curriculum from a local school or someone who has been home schooling rather than purchase new curriculum.

    • 2

Think about your faith or worldview and how much you want it to be a part of your home schooling experience. If you want to include your faith into your child's education, exclude any curriculum that does not include that view.

    • 3

Determine how much you want to put into home schooling. Some home-school curriculums require a lot of involvement by the parent while others require minimal parental involvement.

    • 4

Assess your child and how she learns best. A link to a learning assessment for your child is listed in the resources section to help you determine how your child learns.

    • 5

Set short- and long-term goals for what your child learns. Goals will help you and your child feel as though you are accomplishing something as you go through the school year.

    • 6

Investigate popular home schooling methods. Determine which method makes the most sense for you and your child. Exclude any curriculum that does not include this method.

    • 7

Choose a curriculum based on the results of the previous steps. Do not be afraid to adapt the curriculum to your specific situation and child.
