How to Design a Homeschooling Curriculum

Homeschooling your child is a major endeavor that takes considerable time, money and energy. Designing your child's curriculum to her specific needs in each subject is the best way for her to get the most out the great opportunity she has to be schooled at home. You may need to think outside even the "homeschooling box."

Instructions

    • 1

Go slowly in making decisions. Your child's education is very important; that's probably part of the reason you decided to homeschool. Rushing into decisions about a curriculum just to have your child "doing something" doesn't help your child.

    • 2

Find out what subjects your child needs to study at his age level and any extracurricular interests he has. Check with your local school district to find out the requirements for each grade.

    • 3

After you determine the basic five to seven topics he'll be learning about this year, find a testing system that can test his current level of understanding in each area. He may be at par for his age group in English, ahead in history and behind in math. Once you find out, you can design a curriculum around his needs.

    • 4

Study your options, talk to other homeschoolers and evaluate your findings. You can tailor your child's education however you want. If you decide to go with a commercial homeschooling curriculum, you can add to it or subtract from it however you like. It's still yours to design.

    • 5

Choose the best curriculum for your child and start her at the appropriate level in each course. Don't feel stuck with just one company to supply your needs. Make your decisions subject by subject.

    • 6

Be flexible and keep track of what's working and what isn't. Certain subjects may be easy for your child and for some he may need a different method. Adapt his schooling to his needs.
