How to Make Word Wall Folders

Teachers use word walls in primary and elementary classrooms to teach and strengthen vocabulary. A word wall, displayed on a wall or bulletin board, contains important words students need to know. These words could be new vocabulary, words with difficult spellings, commonly confused words, rhyming words, words beginning with the same letter and words with related meanings or themes. Folders hold and organize words on a word wall. For example, one folder could contain all words that begin with "B" or all words that rhyme with "-in." Teachers can make their own folders for their word walls and customize their size and appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 to 10 sheets of Bristol board, construction paper or other slightly stiff paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape or stapler
  • Colorful writing utensils, such as markers or crayons
  • Decorations, such as glitter or stickers

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a sheet of Bristol board into an approximately 8 ½-inch by 11-inch rectangle, or use precut construction paper in that size.

    • 2

Fold the rectangle of paper in half, widthwise. The two shorter ends of the paper should meet each other.

    • 3

Hold the paper so that the fold is facing down. Staple the left and right sides of the paper, creating a pocket.

    • 4

Label the folder according to the types of words it will contain. For example, write "The Letter 'B'" or "Rhymes With 'in'" on the front in bright, bold letters, visible enough to be read at the back of the classroom.

    • 5

Decorate the folder to make it appealing. If the title of the folder is "Words of Spring," draw spring-related images on it, such as trees and flowers. This visual cue helps students understand the content of the folder.

    • 6

Staple the back sheet of the folder to your word wall if it is on a bulletin board; tape the back sheet to a regular wall. Place words inside the folder.
