Make a spelling game. A game like memory is enjoyable for children to play and they teach the reading and spelling of the word without the extra work of learning all of the spelling rules. Memory is a game where there are a few words written twice on cards and placed upside down. Flip one card over and look for its matching word. When the words do not match, flip them back over so they are face down again. The players then try again to match the words by flipping over other cards. If they see words that match a word previously found, flip the second card over and take the match out of the game. The person with the most matched pairs wins.
Learn through phonics. Phonics is reading and spelling according to how a word sounds. The child learning to write is told a word and asked to spell it according to the sounds. For example, the child is told the word "cat" and with the "k" sound combined with the "at" sounds, they spell out the word "cat". While it is not always accurate, since some sounds are similar, looking at the word after spelling it according to phonics is usually enough to determine when letters are wrong.
Play an online spelling game. There are online games available for all spelling and grade levels. Though these are games that require computer use and typing, it focuses on learning to spell and learning the letters that make up various words. Games online include filling in missing letters, spelling out the full word or scrambled letter spelling games.
Practice spelling. While phonics and games are useful in spelling, the only way to remember spelling consistently is practicing the spelling over and over again. Eventually, the combination of fun activities, phonic spelling and practice results in knowing the spelling of the new words.
