How to Learn Sanskrit for Kids

From tattoo parlors to yoga studios, Sanskrit is facing a resurgence in unexpected areas. Students in the UK and Ireland, even younger children, are studying it in increasing numbers. With fascinating, decorative script and many classics of ancient literature to unlock, the revival is producing many resources which can be used to teach children the ancient language. Children learn Sanskrit as early as kindergarten. High school Sanskrit as a Second Language courses are available, and students at MIT have organized a Sanskrit Club. Both the sounds and the exotic characters make the language fun to learn.

Instructions

    • 1

Play a lesson of the Sanskrit DVD for the child each week.

    • 2

Practice drawing characters from the lesson. Use large motion with a paintbrush or marker. Say the sound while drawing.

    • 3

Keep the paintings on the refrigerator or a wall to admire and memorize, and to practice the sound.

    • 4

As the course introduces words, draw and practice those.

    • 5

Test knowledge periodically by saying sounds or words and having the child try to draw them.

    • 6

Reverse roles and have the child draw a character, and the parent say the sound with the child agreeing or disagreeing.

    • 7

Visit a yoga shop, Indian market or other location with Sanskrit characters displayed and try to identify the characters. Say them as you see them.

    • 8

As the child learns words, have her write them on cards and place them on objects they describe.

    • 9

Place a copy of a simple Sanskrit poem or saying in the learning area as motivation to continue learning to understand the poem.
