Talk to your child in Spanish. For children, one of the best ways to pick up a new language is to hear it spoken fluently and regularly. Have simple conversations with your child in Spanish. If one of your child's caregivers is fluent in Spanish, ask that person to speak to your child exclusively in Spanish for an immersion experience, making it easier for her to pick up the language.
Introduce new words in both languages. As your child learns new vocabulary words on English, tell him what the same word is in Spanish. Help your child practice his vocabulary skills by asking him what certain items are in Spanish or ask him to give you a Spanish lesson focusing on some new words that he has learned.
Teach slowly. Give your child time to master the language. As your child learns, she may speak less and occasionally get the two languages confused. In addition, speaking a new language often takes more time than understanding. Continue to expose your child to Spanish but allow time for her process all she is learning.
Visit Mexican or Spanish cultural events. Take your child to cultural events where the participants and visitors are likely to be speaking Spanish. Give your child a chance to practice his new language with native speakers and use the opportunity to teach him about the culture of his new language.
Use bilingual games and toys. Give your child a chance to explore Spanish on her own by letting her play with Spanish-speaking or bilingual toys. Select toys that speak Spanish clearly and have a fluent Spanish accent. In addition to toys, offer your child Spanish CDs and let her watch bilingual television shows. Share bilingual or Spanish language books with your child as well.
