Teach your child a Spanish concept. Introduce the Spanish language to your child one Spanish concept at a time. Just as you would for the English language, decide which concept you want to introduce to your child first. You can start with numbers and counting, the alphabet or colors.
Incorporate Spanish phrases he has learned into conversations with your child. As your child is learning and mastering a concept, you can help him make a cognitive connection between what he is learning and its proper usage by including his learned Spanish phrases into conversations with him. The Center for Applied Linguistics terms this technique "code-switching," explaining that it is "a sign of mastering of two linguistic systems... ." By completing this step, you are giving your child one of the same experiences he would have if he were raised in a bilingual home.
Find opportunities for your child to be in a Spanish-speaking environment. At least once a week, allow your child to be around a fluent Spanish speaker who is instructing or reading in Spanish. As your child listens to someone speak fluently in Spanish, she will begin to pick up the flow and sound of the language when it is spoken in its native tongue. She will also start to recognize words that you have taught her, as well as interpret new ones.
