How to Learn Greek for Children

Kathleen Marcos, of Kids Source, says most experts concur that the earlier a child is introduced to a language or a second language, the more likely she is to become skilled in it. That's why letting your son or daughter learn Greek at a very young age is an excellent idea. Not only will his or her vocabulary and language skills increase, but he or she will be able to converse with Greek friends or relatives without any problem.

Instructions

  1. Immersion

    • 1

Greek immersion programs are available in a select number of schools. They permit children to spend a portion of their school day learning Greek. Some schools let their students learn all subjects such as math or science in Greek, while some just focus on the language itself.

    • 2

Research schools that offer immersion programs in Greek.

    • 3

Contact the schools to get more information on their Greek immersion program.

    • 4

Visit the school to which you are interested in sending your child.

    • 5

Enroll your child in the school of your choice.

    Flashcards

    • 6

To introduce a new Greek word, hold up a flashcard while you say the word clearly. Say the word two to three times while the child is listening. It is better to include a picture of the word for easier and quicker learning.

    • 7

Practice the "read and repeat" technique. Read the word aloud and ask your child or children to repeat the word with you a couple of times.

    • 8

Once you're done with one word, move on to the next. Do not introduce too many words at a time.

    Books

    • 9

If your child prefers books to flash cards, visit a site like greekcity.com to find book recommendations for your little linguists. One very useful book is "My First 100 Words in Greek and English."

    • 10

Once you select your book, have your child browse through the book and try to learn his or her first word.

    • 11

Practice the first, and subsequent words, with your child.
