How Can I Help My Child Learn at Home?

Learning is a lifelong process. As parents or guardians, you play a central role in your child's development. Before kids even attend school, they learn things like language, grooming habits and reading skills at home. And home-based learning doesn't end once children master these skills. Continue teaching your child as he grows, and adopt strategies that will best help him learn.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the amount of television and video games your child consumes every day. Without these significant distractions, children have more time to read and to properly complete their homework.

    • 2

Teach your child to play a musical instrument, such as the piano or guitar. When learning to play music, children boost their problem-solving abilities while breaking down complex compositions into smaller parts. Children also learn patience, persistence and confidence through music. Discover what instrument your child prefers at a music store or from your own collection. Encourage your child to practice often with the instrument at home.

    • 3

Guide your children in learning to read. When reading an age-appropriate book, use your finger and point to certain words as you pronounce them. Animate characters by simulating animal noises or adopting funny accents for human voices. Ask your child how the pictures in the book relate to the story you are telling. Continue reading aloud to your children, even when they have learned to read on their own. Kids have an easier time understanding complex material when hearing it, as opposed to reading it themselves.

    • 4

Assist your children with homework. If they make mistakes, which they inevitably will, explain in clear terms how to properly solve the problem. Encourage kids to succeed and reward positive behavior. If a young child correctly answers a series of math problems, give her time to play a favorite game.
