Consider how much time you have free during a regular week. Jot down how much time you can allocate to homeschooling each day.
Call a local public school and ask them if they know of anyone in the area who is currently homeschooling their children, or have homeschooled children in the past.
Talk to those parents. Find out how much time they needed to devote to their children in order to feel like the students would not fall behind. Inquire about expenses, as well as any other questions you may have.
Find out the legal requirements for the state in which you reside. Indiana, Texas, Illinois, and Idaho do not require parents to provide any information about the homeschooling of their children. Other states require certain documentation. Consult with the Home School Legal Defense Association if you have any questions regarding what information you need to provide.
Purchase materials. This can include school books, lesson plans, educational software and other materials you would like to use to help your children learn.
Look at online classes, or anything offered in your area, that can help parents considering homeschooling. This can be a good source of support.
Map out lesson plans a month in advance, so you have plenty of work for your children, and do not need to stress last-minute about what to teach on any particular day.
Find out what standardized tests are required for all students, and make sure your child takes the appropriate tests as needed.
