How to Help Children Learn Subtraction Facts

Games that use repetition help a child remember the rules of subtraction. These games can be played as part of a child's homework time or during playtime to reinforce what he learns in school. For example, you can arrange a group of cups and take two away, then ask the child how many are left. Use math tricks with an older child to help him memorize subtraction rules. (Reference 1)

Instructions

    • 1

Teach a child the basics at a young age. Use visual clues to illustrate basic subtraction. For example, line up a row of toys and count them out loud for the child, take a toy away and count them again.

    • 2

Ask your child to review subtraction homework. assignments with you. This will help solidify the basic rules and give you a chance to help her correct mistakes before they become bad habits.

    • 3

Practice subtraction exercises while enjoying a day together. If a basic subtraction problem arises while you are spending time with your child, ask him to solve the problem. Making subtraction exercises into a game will get him excited about his new knowledge. (Reference 3)

    • 4

Repeat subtraction exercises before bedtime. The brain stores important information in long-term memory during sleep, so before-bed practice will help your child retain the information.
