How to Help Children Learn Alphabet Letters

The degree of difficulty with which children learn how to read depends on their ability to identify smaller sounds and letters in spoken words, according to The National Institute for Literacy. This ability, known as phonemic awareness, helps children break up words into individual letters and put together letters to create words. There are a number of ways to teach children alphabet letters, including games and songs.

Instructions

Practice often until children can identify individual letters in their name with ease.

Write your child's name on a piece of cardboard using colored markers. Write with uppercase letters, as they can be easier for children to identify. With the child watching, write down each letter in his name while saying them out loud. Ask your child to repeat the letters with you.

Using magnets to spell words can help a child recall those words.

Use magnetic alphabet letters to expand upon the letters your child can already identify. Write common words and the names of friends and family members by placing the magnets on the refrigerator. Practice spelling the words with your child.

Sing the alphabet song to your child. Help him memorize the song's words and letters by singing the alphabet song together a few times a day. Take letter sequences from an alphabet books your child likes and sing them together to the tune of the alphabet song.
